The Salesian Catechetical Centre (SCC) in Pune that was started in 1976 was serving the Diocese of Pune through programmes conducted mainly in English. In 1991, the provincial of Mumbai, Fr. Loddy Pires, was eager that the Centre at Pune reach out to Catholics in the surrounding Marathi-speaking villages as well. The nearby mission at Ahmednagar urgently required a similar centre to cater to its catechetical and pastoral needs.
In May, 1991, Fr. Peter Gonsalves was transferred from St. John's , Bhingar to Don Bosco Youth Centre, Pune to be administrator and to assist Fr. Maurice Figuerido, the Director of the SCC. In keeping with the Provincial's desire to reach out beyond the English world, a parallel production unit was set up called “Tej-Prasarini” (Sanskrit for “Light Diffuser”, an abbreviated version of the motto of SCC: “To tell people about the Light”.) Tej-Prasarini was conceived as an audiocassette ministry that would attempt to educate the Marathi speaking population to values and the Christian faith in a manner that was acceptable to them. For this the old unused studio of the Catechetical centre was updated with a four-track machine and new acoustic arrangements. In the months that followed, four audiocassettes were produced in Marathi, two in Hindi and a passion play was staged based on the sound track of one of these cassettes.
In September 1993 Fr. Peter - who was at this time also the editor of SDB West - was transferred to Mumbai with the mandate to set up a provincial information office at the Provincial House. (Mumbai was one among the 21 nodes of the International Information Network linked through e-mail – a pioneering initiative set up by the Communication Department at the Generalate in Rome , which was later called ANS).
